"We are tackling harmful French policies because today the political, economic and military relations that France has with certain African countries seriously undermine the rights and freedoms of our peoples. (...) Normally, for a dictatorship like ours in Chad, which is so repressive, France should break its cooperation agreements with it." - DEMBA Karyom.
Member of Tournons La Page Chad, sociologist, union leader and human rights activist, DEMBA Karyom actively advocates the withdrawal of the French army from Chad. In a lengthy interview with the web series and podcast "Sobrevivir el descalabro" (Surviving the Crisis), she looks back on her activist career and addresses a range of topical issues, including women's rights, trade union rights in Chad, the debt trap facing African states, Françafrique, the so-called "anti-French" sentiment, and Israel's murderous actions in Gaza. This interview paints a militant portrait of DEMBA Karyom, positioning her as one of the main opponents of Déby's regime in Chad and a leading figure of feminism in her country.
Interview conducted in Paris in March 2024, during DEMBA Karyom's conference tour organized by the Survie association in France, in the cities of Angers, Toulouse, Grenoble, Lyon, Paris, Bressuire, Nantes, Strasbourg, Marseille and Lille.
