Terrorism, an increasingly worrying situation in Niger

Terrorist attacks on the national territory since 2015 are taking on an increasingly disturbing scale by targeting innocent and defenseless civilians. These attacks can occur anywhere and at any time on the national territory without the perpetrators being worried. On January 2, more than 100 people were killed in Tchomobongou in the Tillabéri region. On March 15, 2021, 58 people were killed in Banibangou in the same region, and on March 21, 2021, 137 people were killed in the commune of Tillia, Tahoua region. Numerous other attacks have also been carried out in the country, notably on February 21, the day of the presidential elections.

With these numerous terrorist incursions into Niger's territory causing hundreds of deaths since the beginning of the year, questions are being asked about the relevance and effectiveness of the security arrangements put in place by the Nigerien government and its international allies.

Horror and barbarism seem to characterize the daily life of the Nigerien people, and the security situation is increasingly precarious to the point where citizens feel abandoned to their sad fate, at the mercy of unidentified armed groups whose vocation is to sow death and desolation on the national territory. Many even choose to leave their land to take refuge in the cities, creating large refugee neighborhoods without resources.

Article 11 of the Nigerien constitution makes the human person sacred, and it is up to the president to take measures to protect Nigerien citizens and anyone living on the national territory. It is high time to stop this descent into hell by reviewing the security apparatus from top to bottom in order to adapt it to the strategies and operating methods of these armed groups and to put an end to these massacres.
