Guinea: a clear attempt by those in power to end Oumar Sylla's life
Press Release   par Tournons la Page

Tournons La Page expresses its deep concern about the state of health of Oumar Sylla, deputy coordinator of TLP-Guinée and head of mobilization for the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution. Arrested for his opinions between April 17 and August 27, 2020, and again on September 29, 2020, Oumar Sylla's state of health is deteriorating by the day due to the very difficult prison conditions at Conakry Central Prison. Since January 2021, he has been hospitalized seven times.

After a hunger strike on December 25, 2020 to demand his trial. He ended his strike on January 8, 2021, after the date of his hearing had been scheduled. Very weak, he had to be hospitalized the same day. In March, he contracted Covid-19 due to overcrowding in Guinean prisons, and was only able to receive medical assistance under pressure from public opinion and his lawyers.

On July 27, Oumar Sylla was evacuated to Ignace DEEN hospital, where a panel of cardiology doctors demanded his immediate emergency hospitalization due to the advanced deterioration in his state of health, two electrocardiograms having revealed serious heart problems and Oumar Sylla's inability to walk. But the Guinean authorities refused to comply with the doctors' injunction, despite the urgency of the situation and the doctors' findings and recommendations, and kept Oumar Sylla in detention. Today, August 2, 2021, Oumar Sylla was once again admitted to hospital following a seizure.

The Guinean authorities' refusal to treat the activist shows a clear desire to let him die. Moreover, his wife fears a risk of poisoning, as did the four opponents who died in prison earlier this year.

Tournons La Page demands that the Ministry of Justice allow Oumar Sylla to receive the care he needs.
