Guinea: Twelfth day of hunger strike for Oumar Sylla
Press Release  Posté le 05-01-2021 14:33, modifié le 05-01-2021 14:33 par Tournons la Page

Oumar Sylla, also known as Foniké Menguè, vice coordinator of Tournons la Page Guinée (TLP-Guinée), and responsible for the mobilisation of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (NFDC), has been incarcerated without any form of judgement since the 19th of September 2020.

Oumar Sylla, who was presented to a judge in October, was first charged with “criminally participating in a gathering in public, degradation and destruction of public property, acts tending to compromise public safety, and creating serious disorder to public order”. However, after several public interrogations, a judge only retained one charge against him, “criminally participating in a public gathering”.

Since Friday the 25th of December 2020, Oumar Sylla has begun a hunger strike to protest against his prolonged detention at the Maison Centrale de Conakry, and to demand the immediate holding of a trial.

On the 12th day of the trying test that is a hunger strike, TLP-Guinea worries about Mr. Oumar Sylla’s physical and mental condition. TLP demands his unconditional release and considers this prolonged detention to be punishment for his opposing Mr. Alpha Condé’s third mandate.

Today, Foniké Menguè asks only for the upholding of an elementary right, the right to a fair trial. TLP-Guinea regrets the obstinacy shown by M. Alpha Condé’s decision to retain its deputy coordinator for unadmitted reasons.
